For many families, having a domestic worker to help with the tasks of everyday life really takes the pressure off. When employing a domestic worker, however, there are various legal aspects to consider, especially if the person is from a non-EU/EFTA country, i.e. they are what is known as a third-country national. We are happy to help you in this regard and are available to provide advice and support. Our decades of experience in this field mean we know exactly how to go about obtaining a work permit.
Unfortunately, new registrations of domestic workers without EU/EFTA citizenship are not possible under current Swiss legislation on foreign nationals.
An exception is made in the case of families who were previously living abroad and employed a domestic worker there whom they would like to continue to employ in Switzerland. Even in these cases, the following conditions must still be met
- Before entering Switzerland, the domestic worker must have been gainfully employed by you for a minimum of 2 years. You must be able to prove that they were with you for this statutory minimum period.
- There needs to have been a written employment contract, which must be presented as proof of the length of the employment overseas.
- If your domestic worker is not a national of the country in which you were previously resident overseas, you must be able to present an official work permit for your employee from the former country of residence.
